Fire Safety Week

form for the portfolio

Explain that it is important to have an Escape Plan and practice it so that everyone knows what to do if a fire occurs.
Discuss and demonstrate each of the following fire-safety behaviors:
* Get low and go under the smoke to the nearest way out.
* Don't open any doors until you check the door to make sure it is not hot.
* Get out of the home and stay out.
* Meet your family at your Outside Meeting Place.

Invite students to role-play each of the fire-safety behaviors one-by-one.

Review these safety tips about smoke alarms:
  • Smoke alarms make a loud noise if there is smoke or fire in your home.
  • Smoke alarms use batteries. Have a grown-up test the smoke alarms in your home once a month. If the batteries don’t work, the smoke alarm won’t work.
  • Have a home fire escape plan. Know two ways out of every room in your home.
  • When the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
  • Whenever you leave home because of an emergency, go to your family’s Outside Meeting Place. Wait there for your family.
